Pilgrims Gather at St. Theresa’s Bikeke Church to Honor the Uganda Martyrs

Hundreds of pilgrims from the Catholic Diocese of Kitale, together with faithful from neighboring dioceses, gathered at St. Theresa’s Bikeke Church in Sirende Parish for the Vigil Mass and celebrations in honor of the Uganda Martyrs on 2-6-2026. The annual commemoration pays tribute to the heroic men and women who sacrificed their lives for their unwavering Christian faith.

Led by the Diocesan Chaplain for Pilgrims, Fr. Justus Oyugi, alongside other priests from the Diocese of Kitale, the pilgrims participated in various spiritual activities, prayers, and liturgical celebrations. The gathering provided an opportunity for the faithful to thank God for His blessings and seek spiritual renewal while praying for their personal intentions, the Diocese, the nation, and the needs of the Church and society.

This year’s pilgrimage celebrations were held within the Diocese of Kitale following the suspension of pilgrimages to Namugongo, Uganda, due to health precautions and travel advisories issued in response to an Ebola outbreak. Despite the change in venue, the spirit of devotion and faith remained strong as pilgrims united in prayer and fellowship.

The celebrations culminated with the Solemn Holy Mass in remembrance of the Uganda Martyrs, especially St. Charles Lwanga and his companions, who courageously gave their lives in defense of the Christian faith. Their witness continues to inspire Christians around the world to remain steadfast in faith, courageous in adversity, and committed to living out the Gospel in their daily lives.

The commemoration served as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of the Uganda Martyrs and their example of faith, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to Christ.
